Lest you fall victim to an increasingly sophisticated cyber attack, follow these guidelines:
1. Don't keep full financial account numbers in your computer
2. Don't open Email attachments until you verify the sender's return Email address as being correct
3. Have, use and keep updated a suite of security software, (firewall, malware, anti-virus)
4. Back up your data frequently to an offsite vendor or an external hard drive
5. Don't keep a list of passwords in your computer
6. Change passwords frequently
7. Turn your computer off when not in use
8. Have your internet modem located by your computer and be prepared to immediately physically disconnect the modem if you detect unexpected activity on your computer
9. Don't cave in to a ransom demand; contact a computer tech first
