California has announced it will reduce the number of violent criminals behind bars by over 9,500 during the next ten years. Virtually any inmate except those on death row or those serving
life-without-parole sentences are eligible to earn credits and lower
their sentences.
Why?
Because they went to court and complained that their accommodations were too crowded and they were therefore living in inhumane conditions. Police and particularly prosecutors fought a recent ballot initiative,
arguing that it will release dangerous offenders sometimes years earlier
than called for in their sentences. It also will put convicts more
quickly into county probation systems that already are stretched.
But the do gooders have decided that citizens get to suffer twice: once when the criminal commits the crime and once when they don't have to serve the time.
Who is to blame for this ass-backwards mess?
