Restaurants in California, faced with escalating minimum wages mandated by the state, are responding by taking all or a portion of the employee tips. In January, minimum wage will go up to $13 an hour in
Sacramento. Moreover, California legislators are considering raising the
minimum wage across the entire state to the same rate.
Restaurant owners are adding surcharges to dinner bills, charging service charges and using similar ploys in an attempt to defray the increased costs of doing business.
When you get right down to it, who is to blame for this mess? Personally, I don't care what they do; I've quit dining out.
