BLAGOJEVICH VERDICT SYMPTOMATIC OF WHAT AILS AMERICA

Rod Blagojevich, the charismatic former Governor of Illinois, was found guilty of one count out of 24 pending against him by a Federal Jury yesterday; 23 ended up in a mistrial due to hung jury. Prosecutors were quick to vow that they will immediately seek a new trial on the remaining counts.

When you look back at the foul language, the forlorn cries of “What’s in it for me” and much of the other testimony that was revealed to the public, one’s first reaction might just be, “That’s Chicago-style politics.” But, I think it is more than that. I think it is an example of the decline of our morals and ethics in this country and I further think that such decline is directly responsible for the situation in which this country now finds itself.

“It’s of the “everything for me and screw everyone else” mentality. People of this culture tend to be smooth talkers who are of the opinion that he world owes them something. When you become that narcissistic, to the extent that you believe the world revolves around you, ethics and moral principles must inevitably take a back seat. In the evolution of things, it would seem to me that anarchy is the next step. We’re close to that now.

Those in places of high power who ignore the will of the people are of this mindset. They are so wrapped up in themselves that everyone else ceases to exist. And, as this mindset has permeated all facets of life in our country, we have lost work ethics, a strong sense of what is right and what is wrong, and we’ve had a basic decay of our society.

There was a day in my lifetime when this behavior was unacceptable. Things in this country were much better in those days. We looked up to politicians, we had much less crime and our country was not heading for international bankruptcy. We had ethics and morals and when people violated them, there was hell to pay. According to those rules, at least half of Congress would be out of a job today, and so would the President.

We simply have to get back to the basics of living by good and fundamental values. We need to instill those values in our children and we need to demand that they be followed. Otherwise, America will just keep on sinking into the abyss and we will be to blame.
