Emil Limpert from Missouri always took pride in being able to fend for himself, but when the World War II vet finally ran out of money, he finally filed for Veterans Benefits. The V.A. promptly said it had never heard of him.
Limpert, who was awarded a Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars, produced all kinds of paperwork, including discharge papers, the names of his foxhole pals and the official X-ray of his wounded leg. The V.A. refused to budge. They want him to submit affidavits from fellow service members, most of whom are
dead, or the location of the hospital where he was originally treated after his leg was injured during a battle in the Philippines. “There ain’t no hospital,” he said. “We were in the jungles.”
A fire burned thousands of records back in 1973. Over the years, the military has traditionally accepted copies of military records as evidence of service; they're not budging in this case.
Horror stories keeping on coming from the V.A.; nothing has changed.
