Another dozen or so I.R.S. computers have crashed, losing all of their emails. The one thing they all have in common is an association with Lois Lerner. In the meanwhile, a top I.R.S. official, faced with mounting claims that the hard drives might be recovered, late yesterday said that backups might be available after all; he's "uncertain."
In the normal routine of things, when backup tapes get full, they are removed and replaced with new ones. The old ones are then put back into a "rotation" to be reused. The official testified to the House last week that he is not certain whether or not the backup tapes being used at the time Lerner's computer "crashed" have yet been rewritten or not.
They've probably been "misplaced" or contaminated another computer "glitch." And here we sit, just taking it all in.
